Washington Sundar will join the India squad for the Asia Cup final.

Washington last played against New Zealand in January 2023

Washington Sundar is expected to join the India squad in Colombo for the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka on Sunday.

Sundar, 23, has been called in as a replacement for Axar Patel, who is said to have left the Super Four match against Bangladesh with niggles. The extent of Axar’s injuries is yet unknown, but his availability for the match is in doubt after sustaining a few blows during his innings on Friday night at Premadasa Stadium.

Sundar is currently in Bengaluru as part of India’s Asian Games squad. He is likely to return to the Asian Games camp following the final. The camp will last until September 23rd, when the games will begin in Hangzhou, China.

Axar scored 42 runs off 34 balls, including three fours and two sixes. He also contributed to two significant partnerships, the first with Shubman Gill (39 runs for the seventh wicket) and the second with Shardul Thakur (40 runs for the eighth wicket), which kept India’s chances of victory alive. Those aspirations were dashed, however, when he was dismissed in the penultimate over.

Sundar, who bowls offbreaks and bats left-handed, last played an ODI at home against New Zealand in January of this year, but he did not make the tentative World Cup team of 15 players.

Sundar, if chosen for the final, might be useful with his offspin against Sri Lanka’s left-handers on what has been a favorable track in Colombo thus far.
