The stakes are high as undefeated rivals India and Pakistan meet in Ahmedabad.

When India and Pakistan meet in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, both will be looking to make a statement against their close rivals.

Date and location
Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, Saturday, October 14th

The arch-rivals have a long cricketing history together. While Pakistan outright dominates India in one-day internationals (ODIs), India has an enviable record in the Cricket World Cup, with 73 wins to 56 losses.

Since their first World Cup meeting in 1992, India has never lost a World Cup game against them.

The stakes have risen even higher in the highly anticipated group stage match between India and Pakistan, after both teams dominated their first two matches.

India impressed in their first appearance at the tournament, as their spinners tore through Australia’s batting lineup, which was eventually skittled for 199 runs.

The hosts had to overcome an early scare from Australia’s pacers, but then cruised to victory after Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97*) took command of the game.

In their next match, India defeated Afghanistan with eight wickets and 15 overs to spare, but they can expect a tougher test against Pakistan.

Babar Azam’s team easily defeated the Netherlands to kickstart their own campaign, then impressed with the bat while completing the highest successful chase in Cricket World Cup history.

Pakistan may be concerned that Sri Lanka was able to score 344 runs thanks to Kusal Mendis (122) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (108), but their own stacked batting lineup was more than up to the task.

The usually dependable Babar and Imam-ul-Haq have both missed out on the tournament so far and will be eager to make an impact against India, but Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan have already demonstrated strong form with centuries against Sri Lanka.

Since the Cricket World Cup 2019, the rivals have only played one ODI match, which India won by 228 runs thanks to centuries from Kohli and Rahul Dravid.

India’s squads are as follows: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav.

Pakistan: Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Mohammad Rizwan, Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Salman Ali Agha, Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Wasim.

India’s key players include Rohit Sharma.
Rohit Sharma’s record-breaking tumbling blitz in Delhi gave India a massive run rate advantage over Afghanistan.

Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra of New Zealand demonstrated against England that a strong foundation can lead to success in Ahmedabad. Though he’ll be up against a much better pace bowling lineup, including Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf, India will hope to get off to the best possible start thanks to their captain.

Rohit averages close to 50 against Pakistan and scored a match-winning 140 in their last meeting four years ago in Manchester. There is little doubt that if the batter gets India’s top-order going, the hosts will have a significant advantage in the game. A strong performance against Pakistan’s new-ball bowlers will also boost his confidence.

Hasan Ali of Pakistan
Hasan Ali has proven to be an excellent replacement for Naseem Shah. With six wickets at an average of 17.33, he is Pakistan’s best bowler so far in the World Cup. However, this Ahmedabad competition will be a big test for him.

His overall career average against India isn’t particularly impressive. It is 51.6, with an economy approaching seven. But he can really shine in big games. He demonstrated this in the 2017 ICC Men’s Champions Trophy Final, where he was Pakistan’s best performer with 3/19.

This contributed to Pakistan’s commanding 180-run victory over India.
