Ponting praises Rohit as the leader of a ‘team to beat’

According to three-time winner Ricky Ponting, Rohit Sharma is the ideal captain for India as they compete for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 trophy on home soil.
India has made a strong start to their Cricket World Cup campaign, winning convincingly against Australia, Afghanistan, and archrival Pakistan.

The three victories have propelled India to the top of the standings, dismissing concerns about how the hosts would handle the added pressure of playing in front of adoring fans.

Ricky Ponting, a two-time World Cup winner, has cited skipper Rohit Sharma as the key to India rising to the occasion despite being surrounded by fervent home support.

“He’s very relaxed, Rohit. “He’s very laid back about everything he does,” Ponting told the ICC while sharing his DP World-powered smart perspectives.

“You can even tell by the way he plays. He’s also a pretty laconic batsman, and he’s that way both on and off the field.

“We can’t sit back and say that the pressure won’t get to them or that it won’t affect them, because it will, simply because of the magnitude of the tournament.”

“But he’ll take it and cope with it as well as probably anyone.”

Since taking over for Virat Kohli in both white-ball formats in December 2021, Rohit has captained India in ODIs.

Ponting believes the current captain is the ideal leader as India prepares to host the showpiece event, allowing Kohli to focus on his starring role with the bat.

India last won the Cricket World Cup in 2011, when it was held in three countries, including their own.

While India was able to use home support to defeat fellow hosts Sri Lanka in the final at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, they are still looking for their third Cricket World Cup title.

Former Australia great Ponting believes the trophy is almost ready for India to take this time.

“I’ve said from the start that I believe they’ll be the team to beat.” “They have a very talented team,” Ponting stated.

“They cover all bases with their fast bowling, spin, and top- and middle-order batting.”

“They’ll be extremely difficult to beat.” But we’ll have to wait and see how they hold up under extreme pressure.”
