Malinga takes a significant decision on Dunith Wellalage’s future.

Lasith Malinga, a Sri Lanka veteran, has heaped praise on Dunith Wellalage after the young spinner sent India’s high-profile top-order spinning with a magnificent bowling performance in the Asia Cup.

Wellalage took his first five-wicket haul at senior international level on Tuesday, taking 5/40 against India in the Asia Cup, and Malinga was suitably impressed.

Malinga reacted to social media immediately following Sri Lanka’s match to compliment Wellalage’s performance, and the Sri Lankan legend believes the young spinner has a bright career ahead of him.

“It’s safe to say that SL played today with 12 players.” “Dunith was that good,” Malinga wrote.

“To go with his all-around skill set, he’s got a brilliant head on his young shoulders.”

“I believe he’s on his way to becoming Sri Lanka’s most important ODI player for the next decade.”

While Wellalage has only played 13 One-Day Internationals for his country, the left-armer appears likely to play a key role in Sri Lanka’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup campaign, which begins in India next month.

Wellalage first demonstrated his talent by finishing as the leading wicket-taker at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup last year, with 17 scalps at an average of 13.58.

During his breakout Asia Cup performance, the 20-year-old delivered huge wickets of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya.

Malinga was not the only worldwide talent who was pleased by Wellalage’s performance, with a slew of other major figures rushing to social media to express their feelings.

While Sri Lanka failed to chase down India’s total of 213, Wellalage closed off an outstanding all-round effort with 42* with the bat and was named Player of the Match.
