Inspired Afghanistan eye another upset in New Zealand clash

Afghanistan will look to apply what they learned in England in Chennai, where they will face a strong New Zealand team in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Date and location
MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Wednesday, October 18
Afghanistan’s victory over England injected new life into the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Aside from upsetting the points table, Afghanistan has demonstrated that they can beat any team in the tournament on their day.

Afghanistan will take heart from the fact that they did not rely on a single player to deliver their first ODI victory since July 2023.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz led the way, Ikram Alikhil fought hard in the middle overs, and Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman made significant all-round contributions.

New Zealand, on the other hand, isn’t going down easily. Despite losing Kane Williamson to a finger fracture during their game against Bangladesh, the Black Caps have had an enviable run in the tournament.

All three of their victories have been by large margins, and the majority of their players have been in excellent form.

Kane Williamson (c), Trent Boult, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitch Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Will Young are the New Zealand squad.

Afghanistan squad: Hashmatullah Shahidi (c), Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Riaz Hassan, Rahmat Shah, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Ikram Alikhil, Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Noor Ahmad, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Abdul Rahman, Naveen ul Haq.
