India and Afghanistan square off with spin-heavy lineups.

India and Afghanistan square off with spin-heavy lineups.

During their match against Afghanistan in Delhi, hosts India will be looking for their second win in a row in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Date and location: Wednesday, October 11, Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi
Both India and Afghanistan struggled with their batting efforts in Dharamsala and Chennai. India fought back from 2/3 at the start of their 200-run chase against Australia, eventually winning by six wickets.

However, Afghanistan failed to make the most of a decent start and fell apart in the middle overs against the Bangladesh spinners. They slid from 112/2 to 156 all out, and lost the game against the Tigers by six wickets.

While both teams will be looking for an improvement in their batting performance, the focus could turn to their respective spinners. Both sides possess some of the finest tweakers in international cricket, and could well put them to good use on Wednesday.

Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav.

India’s Key Players: Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli delivered an outstanding 85 against Australia in Chepauk. He held off the new ball threat and then overcame the turn to help India win its first World Cup. India will be hoping that the experienced batter continues to perform well at home.

There is no shortage of experience in India’s top order, but given how the track behaved on Saturday during the South Africa-Sri Lanka match, they’d want an experienced head to keep the innings together while the others go for their shots.

On Wednesday, Kohli can play exactly that role for India.

Rashid Khan, Afghanistan
Rashid Khan went wicketless in Afghanistan’s match against Bangladesh, and as a result, the team didn’t pose much of a challenge.

Rashid has been a key breakthrough provider for his team, taking 172 wickets at an average of less than 20, and Afghanistan will be hoping that Rashid is in top form against India.

Rashid will know the exact tactics he needs to employ to get the most out of the wickets based on his experience in these conditions while playing in the Indian Premier League.
