The Proteas’ warm-up matches against Afghanistan and New Zealand will be without captain Temba Bavuma, which will hamper South Africa’s preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Due to family obligations, Bavuma must fly home and will miss South Africa’s two crucial warm-up games. T20I captain Aiden Markram will take over as captain in Bavuma’s absence.

On Friday in Thiruvananthapuram, South Africa plays Afghanistan in the first of two exhibition matches before wrapping up their preparations for the competition on October 2 against the Kiwis at the same Greenfield Stadium venue.

At Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, where they play Sri Lanka in their World Cup debut, Bavuma is most likely to be ready to play.

For the Proteas recently, Bavuma has been in excellent form, scoring an unbeaten century against Australia in Bloemfontein earlier this month.

Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala, two crucial South African pacers, are already out of the competition due to injury.
