Australia names Sean Abbott to its World Cup squad.

Sean Abbott’s recent form on the ball earned him a spot in the World Cup squad.

Sean Abbott has earned his first opportunity to play in an ODI World Cup after being named to Australia’s 15-man squad. Australia had already named an initial 18-man squad ahead of the South Africa tour, but Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, and Tanveer Sangha were left out.

Abbott, 31, made his ODI debut in October 2014, almost nine years ago, but has only represented Australia in the format 11 times in total.

Abbott’s selection also demonstrates Australia’s preference for a squad heavy on allrounders for the marquee event in India. Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green, and Marcus Stoinis are the seam bowling allrounders for the five-time champions. Aside from the trio, they now have Abbott and skipper Pat Cummins, both of whom can contribute with the bat lower down the order.

Australia’s spin options are Ashton Agar, Glenn Maxwell, and Adam Zampa, with Maxwell expected to be fully fit for the tournament. Apart from Maxwell, the likes of Cummins, Steve Smith, and Mitchell Starc are all injured, but they are all expected to play in the ODIs ahead of the World Cup against India.

“All are well placed to come back online in the coming weeks and potentially for selection in the upcoming series against India,” selection chief George Bailey said. “There are eight one-day matches remaining in South Africa and India before the final squad is announced.” They are followed by two World Cup practice games, providing ample opportunity to continue preparations for the tournament.”

Australia has until September 28, the ICC-mandated deadline, to make changes to their squad. On October 8, they will kick off their campaign against the hosts, India.
