Afghanistan and Bangladesh are hoping for an early World Cup victory to kick off their campaigns.

Afghanistan and Bangladesh are hoping for an early World Cup victory to kick off their campaigns.

Bangladesh and Afghanistan’s chances of reaching the final four of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 may well be determined by the outcome of their first match on October 7.

Date and location: October 7, HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala

Only qualifiers Netherlands are ranked lower in the men’s ODI rankings than Bangladesh and Afghanistan, implying that both of these teams will need a series of upsets to reach the semi-finals.

However, both teams have plenty of talent and are capable of trouncing the world’s best, especially in conditions that play to their strengths, as will be the case in some of the tournament’s venues.

Victory in Dharamsala would boost either team’s semi-final chances, but the conditions may not favor the teams’ strengths. Afghanistan has three of the top ten spinners in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Bowling Rankings, while Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan remains one of the best in the world.

However, history suggests that spin goes the distance in Dharamsala, where short boundaries and high altitude mean that quick bowlers have had a greater impact.

Afghanistan want to make the most of playing in a second home in India during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023
